Science Vision Statement 2026/2027

At our school, we believe that every child is a scientist. We are committed to nurturing children's natural curiosity about the world around them and developing a lifelong love of scientific discovery from Nursery to Year 2.

Our science curriculum is built upon strong foundational skills in communication, language, observation, questioning, investigation and critical thinking. Through carefully sequenced learning experiences, children develop their scientific knowledge and understanding whilst building the skills needed to explore, enquire and make sense of the world around them.

We believe that science should be accessible, ambitious and inclusive for all learners. Through high-quality adaptive teaching, personalised support and meaningful learning experiences, every child is empowered to participate, achieve and develop confidence as a scientist. We recognise that children learn in different ways and ensure that lessons are adapted to remove barriers to learning whilst maintaining high expectations for all.

For some children, bespoke learning pathways and sensory-rich experiences are carefully planned to support engagement, communication, exploration and understanding. Practical investigations, outdoor learning, sensory exploration and real-life experiences enable all children, including those with SEND, to develop scientific knowledge and skills from their individual starting points. We celebrate different ways of learning and ensure that every child can actively participate in scientific enquiry and discovery.

Our curriculum develops children's understanding of key scientific concepts through first-hand experiences, careful observation, exploration and discussion. Scientific vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited, enabling children to communicate their ideas, ask questions and explain their thinking with increasing confidence and accuracy.

We encourage children to be curious, resilient and reflective learners who are confident to investigate, predict, observe and draw conclusions. Through engaging and purposeful learning opportunities, children develop an understanding of themselves, their environment and the wider world.

By the end of Year 2, our children leave us as confident young scientists who are inquisitive, knowledgeable and ready to build upon their scientific understanding in the next stage of their education. They have developed the foundational skills, scientific knowledge and curiosity needed to continue exploring and understanding the world around them.
